Horta-Sorb water management gel is a proven moisture control solution used in horticulture, agriculture, and landscaping for nearly two decades. These highly absorbent polymers can hold hundreds of times their weight in water and release moisture slowly to plant roots, ensuring consistent hydration while significantly reducing watering needs by up to 50%.

Horta-Sorb’s water gel polymers act as a reservoir within the soil or substrate. As the soil dries, the gel releases moisture back to the root zone—creating a buffer against drought, reducing irrigation costs, and improving plant establishment and survival. Unlike typical watering cycles, this system provides a more consistent and accessible water supply for plant roots, even in challenging conditions.

Originally popularized as a bare root dip in forestry, Horta-Sorb’s versatility led to rapid adoption in greenhouses, nurseries, landscapes, transplant amendments, and hydro-mulching applications. It has even been used in ice packs for cut flower and seafood shipping, due to its water-retentive properties.

Whether you’re managing water in containers, transplanting sensitive crops, or extending shelf life in transport, Horta-Sorb water management gel delivers superior moisture control, saving time, water, and stress on plants.

HOW IS IT USED?

Landscape: Mix Horta-Sorb SM evenly with the back fill in the upper 2/3 of planting hole depth leaving untreated the top 1” of soil. Mix at the rate of 1 oz. per inch caliper of tree or foot diameter of ball.

Containerized Plants: The best way to use Horta-Sorb® with containerized plants is to add the Horta-Sorb® MD at the time of potting up the plants at the rate of ½ to 2 lbs. per cubic yard depending on how much water you want to hold.
